Corporate Structure

OMNIlife science is a wholly owned subsidiary of Orthopaedic Synergy, Inc. (OSI).

OSI was incorporated in December 2008 as a holding company for businesses involved in the manufacture, design, and distribution of orthopaedic devices and instrumentation.

Its initial acquisitions were OMNIlife science, Inc. and Enztec Ltd. Enztec is a designer and manufacturer of orthopaedic instruments and custom implants. Their headquarters are in Christchurch, New Zealand.

In early 2010, Orthopaedic Synergy completed the acquisition of Praxim™, S.A., increasing the breadth of its technology and product portfolio. Praxim, Inc. develops advanced automated systems, software and instruments in order to make total knee arthroplasty less-invasive, more reliable, faster and more cost-effective for both patients and surgeons.

gcipollettiGeorge B. Cipolletti - President and CEO, Board Member of Orthopaedic Synergy, Inc.

Mr. Cipolletti is one of the original founders of Apex Surgical LLC. Previously, he was the Manager for Knee Research for Johnson & Johnson, Professional, where he was responsible for all knee product development. He was the Director of Product Development for Joint Medical Products Corporation when the company was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 1995. In the 1980s, Mr. Cipolletti worked for Baxter Healthcare and Meadox Medical, Inc. in Neurosurgical and Cardiovascular Product Development. He holds a B.S. in Ceramic Science from Pennsylvania State University and an MS in Bioengineering from Clemson University, where his research involved PMMA bone cement.


dlasalleDavid L. LaSalle - Chief Operations Officer, Orthopaedic Synergy, Inc.

Mr. LaSalle was one of the original founders of Apex Surgical LLC. He also worked for Johnson & Johnson Professional as a Senior Engineer in the Knee Product Development Group. Prior to entering the orthopaedics industry, Mr. LaSalle worked at several manufacturing companies. He holds a B.S. in Product Design and Manufacturing from the New England Institute of Technology and an MBA from Bryant College.


echealEdward J. Cheal, PhD - Chief Science Officer

Dr. Cheal is the third co-founder of Apex Surgical LLC. He was previously Director of Research and Implants at Johnson & Johnson Professional where he was responsible for the research and development of both hip and knee business units. Prior to joining Johnson & Johnson in 1993, Dr. Cheal was an assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Co-Director of Biomechanics at the Brigham & Women's Hospital. Dr. Cheal received his PhD in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology in 1986, where his research focus included the mechanics of fracture healing, the biological response to implants and the design of joint replacement devices.


jbarrileJames V. Barrile – Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Barrile joined OMNI in September 2011 and brings extensive experience with growth oriented medical technology companies. He was a member of the senior management team of Nova Biomedical and Chief Financial Officer for Vasca, TranS1 and Keystone Dental. Prior to joining OMNI, he founded Flex Financial, a company that provided strategic guidance and financial services to venture firms and their portfolio companies. Mr. Barrile also co-founded Innovasive Devices, an orthopedic start-up, and served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. In this role, he was instrumental in raising equity capital, leading the company through an IPO and facilitating the sale of the company to Johnson & Johnson. He holds a B.S. in Accounting from Bentley College and an MBA from Babson College.

cknoblochCarl Knobloch - Vice President of International Sales & Marketing

Mr. Knobloch joined OMNI in February 2008 after providing marketing consulting services to OMNI for the prior 18 months. He has an extensive 20 year background in orthopaedic sales and marketing, starting as a Product Manager with ACE Medical, Inc., and steadily working his way up through the company until he became Director of Sales and Marketing for DePuy in the Asia Pacific region. Since 1997 he was worked as an executive management consultant with responsibility for marketing and product development for numerous US and International startup orthopaedic companies in the trauma, spine, and joint replacement markets.


Thomas D. Prokop - Vice President of Sales

Mr. Prokop was most recently Eastern Business Manager for Plus Orthopedics, USA Division. Tom has a 25 year history in orthopaedic sales, including positions with Stryker Osteonics and DePuy, Inc. He holds a B.S. in Biology and an MBA from Long Island University.


Lawrence S. Battista, PhD - Vice President of Surgeon Relations

Larry Battista’s career in Orthopaedics spans 36 years including management of one of DePuy’s most successful independent distributorships. Larry has also held management positions in sales and sales training for DePuy. Larry has also worked as a sales manager for Wright medical and has been an integral part of OMNI’s sales and marketing efforts for the past 3 years. Larry attended Ohio State University, Cleveland State University and California Coast University and holds a PhD in Philosophy and Management.


Dennis Colleran - Vice President of Product Development

Mr. Colleran brings over 22 years of leadership experience in research, engineering and medical devices primarily focused in the development of implantable orthopedic, arthroscopic and spinal systems.  Prior to joining Omni Life Science, Mr. Colleran was Vice President Research and Development at Illuminoss Medical and Innovative Spinal Technologies where he led the Research & Development group in the strategic development of new product lines.  Previously Mr. Colleran held key roles of increasing levels of responsibility at Smith + Nephew Inc. and Johnson and Johnson Professional in the areas of research, systems development and strategic product development and planning in the areas of Total Knee Replacement as well as Knee and Shoulder Arthroscopy.  Prior to joining Johnson & Johnson, Mr. Colleran served with the U.S. Marine Corps and is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm.  Mr. Colleran received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a MBA from Northeastern University.


Eeuwout Hoogendijk - Vice President of Operations

Mr. Hoogendijk brings over 25 years of operational leadership experience; the most recent 12 years in the orthopedics market. Since August of 1999, Mr. Hoogendijk has played a key leadership role within the operations group at Omni focusing on building Omni’s business process, logistics, manufacturing, IT, and customer service infrastructure. Prior to entering the orthopedics industry, Mr. Hoogendijk held management positions with Growest, Inc. with responsibilities including operations, logistics, supply-chain, service, and IT.


Robert P. Zoletti - Vice President of Regulatory Affairs

Mr. Zoletti joined OMNI in September 2009. He is a RAPS Certified Regulatory Affairs Professional with over 26 years experience in medical device companies including Becton Dickenson, Mitek, Johnson & Johnson, Cortek and Alphatec Spine. He holds a BS from RIT and MBA from Bentley University.



Board of Directors


Orthopaedic Synergy's Board consists of 5 members. In addition to Mr. Cipolletti, directors include:

Richard (Nik) D. Nikolaev - Orthopaedic Synergy, Inc. Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Nikolaev has been Chairman of the Board of OMNI since February 2006. He has more than 40 years of experience in the orthopaedic industry. He has served in senior management positions with DePuy, including Executive Vice President from 1971-1984. He served as the President of Protek, Inc. until it was acquired by Sulzer in 1989. After the Protek acquisition, Mr. Nikolaev became Chairman, President, and CEO of Orthomet until it was acquired by Wright Medical Technologies, where he assumed the role of President and CEO at Wright until retirement in 1997. Mr. Nikolaev has served on the boards of a number of other public and private companies and has operated a consulting firm since 1998.

Randal Barrett

Mr. Barrett is Managing Director of Pioneer Capital Partners, a private equity fund manager and investor in expansion stage businesses. Before co-founding Pioneer Capital Partners in 2005, Mr. Barrett had 12 years experience founding, advising, investing in or managing a range of technology related businesses, financiers and governments in all major geographic markets - including as an attorney at a global law firm, an advisor to a major investment bank, co-founder and Chairman of a European telecoms company, and an investment executive at a private equity investment firm.

Bill Birnie

Mr. Birnie is the Chairman and Managing Partner of Birnie Capital Partners Ltd., and is a director of MIL, which is OMNI's largest shareholder. Mr. Birnie has over 35 years experience in the investment banking industry and formed Birnie Capital Partners Ltd. in the mid 1990s. Mr. Birnie holds and has held a number of New Zealand Government appointments including the office of Deputy Chairman of the New Zealand Film Commission. Mr. Birnie is also a director of the New Zealand Equestrian Sports. In addition, he was a founding trustee of the Wellington City's Westpac Trust Stadium, a Commissioner of the New Zealand Government's former sports funding agency; the Hilary Commission, a former Chairman of New Zealand's largest pip fruit exporter, ENZA, Ltd. and Deputy Chairman of the then New Zealand Government owned Post Office Bank prior to its sale to the ANZ Banking Group.

Steve Norrie

Mr. Norrie has had over 30 years experience in investment banking and private equity, during which time he has served on a number of boards including ENZA Ltd, New Zealand’s largest pipfruit exporter, Tabua Investments Ltd (Chairman), the developer of Denarau Resort in Fiji, and New Zealand investment bank, Fay, Richwhite & Co Ltd.  He was a director of OMNI life science from 2005 – 2008 and was Orthopaedic Synergy, Inc’s. inaugural CFO from December 2008 until March 2010. His investment banking career has included leading New Zealand’s first mortgage securitisation and working with Booze Allen Hamilton, JP Morgan and Ernst Young to compile an operational review of the Bank of New Zealand for the Minister of Finance following the recapitalisation of the Bank by the Crown.
